With the failure of the Opium War , China was forced to open its door to the world . In order to be rich and powerful and save the regime of late Qing Dynasty ,the Westernization Faction started the Westernization Movement aiming at learning foreign languages and technology.Westernization education was an education reformation launched by Westernization Faction intending to meet the needs of Westernization Faction and cultivate new—type talents . Due to intellectuals under the traditional education at that time were not able to cultivate the new—type talents , the Westernization Faction had the westerners in China and Christian missionary with western modern educational background play the leading role in the process of China's modern education under the special historical background .Attempting to cultivate religious agent in China to make China a religious country , they participated in westernization education actively .The main activities the Christian missionary taking part in included : firstly , they criticized the traditional education especially the imperial examination system and gave some suggestion on the reformation of imperial examination . Meanwhile , they propagated and brought in western modern education , including by way of the establishment of Christian school and participation of the teaching to transplant western education pattern;secondly , they propagated western science and technology actively , edited and translated western books , which affected the changes of the notion of Chinese scholastic class and the social value , as well as they introduced the modern textbooks to westernization schools and made them more standardized and scientific;more over, they played the role of teachers in Christian schools and westernization schools and solved teachers' problems in westernization schools . From the point of view of cultural transmission , the role of missionary themselves , Chinese people's psychology and Chinese characteristics , together with the features of traditional culture and social environment will result in that the influential scope and degree of the missionary's activity in westernization education was limited .Although missionary and Westernization Faction had different ideas , objectively , missionary played the role of tool and mediation in westernization education . Their words and deeds proved enlightenment of minds for westernization education and transplanting modern education pattern to China so that westernization education surrounded in feudal tradition education showed the appearance of China modern education, and also accelerated the process of education modernization in China . Objectively studying the activity of missionary in westernization education was helpful for us to estimate the influence of missionary in Westernization education.
