Diversification is one of the most important characteristics of the private middle school education in modern Shanghai. From the beginning to the end, the private middle school education charter designed by the church and Chinese elites dominated the secondary education’s development of modern Shanghai, and among which, the regulation charter had laid a solid foundation for the development of private middle schools in management.This thesis takes the regulation charter of private middle schools in mordern Shanghai as the research object, and focuses on the following aspects:Firstly, through reviewing the development of regulation charter in private middle schools of modern Shanghai, to exhibit the historical process of the regulation charter evolving from a set of basic rules of school management finally to be a institutionalized and completed management charter. Secondly, based on document analysis of regulation content, to summary the characteristics of organization management in different kinds of private middle schools.In the third part, according to examine the teachers of private middle schools to analyze how the regulation charter worked in managing teachers. The fourth chapter will focus on studying the students of private middle schools to reveal how the regulation charter to promote its student-oriented principle. Then the fifth chapter tries to interpret how the regulation charter had embodied the principle of "separation of powers" and the meeting and registering rules. The last part will try to establish the links between the regulation charter of private middle schools with school culture, and to explore how the regulation charter, as the law of schools, had been integrated into the school culture, which was full of humanistic spirit.As the epitome of the secondary education development in modern Shanghai, the evolution of private middle schools’ regulation charter reflects the general trend of the modernization of education in Shanghai. By exploring and interpreting archives and regulation texts, this article aims to demonstrate the remarkable influence the regulation charter of private middle school had on the institution history and on the history of education development in modern Shanghai.
