Vague language is a kind of common language phenomenon in human language co mmunicative behavior. It is a kind of language expression which is created to get a special communicative effect in social activities. Scholars in China have done plenty of studies on vague language from the multiple perspectives since the 1970 s such as phonetics, semantics, pragmatics and cognitive linguistics. This paper is based on the abundant research of vague language and with the principle of the Adaptation Theory formulated by Jef Verschueren as the theoretical framework, and with the vague language in English advertisement as language corpora. The thesis aims to analyze the adaptation of vague language and pragmatics functions in different context to meet communicative goals.The study found that the reason why people always use vague language as a means of communication in verbal communication is because vague language can produce a certain pragmatic functions.and vague language in communication is the result of adapting the communicative purpose and the dynamic context.This paper aims to help people to better understand and use vague language in communication to achieve communicative goal.
