Since President Xi Jinping announced China will construct the “Polar Silk Road”,the international community has reacted differently,so it is of great significance to study the attitude of the United States, which is the world's largest economy. Thus, this paper selects 10 editorials from USA's mainstream media so as to study vague language. As vagueness is a commonly used technique in the construction of editorial discourses, the translation of vague language will be chosen for the study. As is known, vague language implies the inner thoughts of the author,so its deep meaning is difficult to judge and the sensitive information behind it is not easy to detect. Therefore,it is often difficult for translators to deal with vague language.Through literature review,it is found that the research on vague language in English editorials is not satisfactory.Against this context, this paper takes the “linguistic adaptation theory” by Verschueren as theoretical basis, and then analyzes vague language in English editorials from three dimensions: the psychological world, social world and physical world.By combining the classification of vague language and the characteristics of specific cases, this report divides vague language into two categories: vagueness in language and vagueness in culture. Then it studies vague language at semantic level, pragmatic level, cultural meaning level and background level. Finally, this paper intends to prove that context adaptation theory can not only explain vague language in editorials, but can guide the translation of vague language. Also, the report summarizes the corresponding translation techniques that can be used for different situations. The translator can first clarify the purpose of the translation, and then judge the adaption object, taking into account the social context of the original author and the target audience as well as the psychological world of the speaker in the original text. The following step is to choose the appropriate translation methods so as to achieve the purpose of translation and complete the communication.Through a dynamical adaption to different communicative contexts, and a flexible choice of translation strategies so as to properly handle vague language, equivalent translations and better communication effect can be achieved by avoiding cultural information transmission barriers in translation.
