Research On Public Art In Colleges And Universities Under Cultural Background

In recent years, with fast development in the higher education reform, the standard on campus environment design is also stepped up gradually. A fine campus environment not only has a direct impact on students and faculty’s daily life but also composes a crucial part of college life and campus culture. As a significant carrier to transmit campus culture, public art of higher education institutions is vital in inheriting campus culture, establishing the brand image of campus culture, promoting the quality of campus culture, passing on the spirit of campus culture and so on. The Establishment of public art in higher education institutions is no longer mere display of works of art like it was in the earlier stage; it is assigned more functions at the present times. The Establishment of public art should abide by the principle of being in harmony with the environment as well as combine the cultural characteristics in the regional environment to ensure the rationality in setting up the public art. In the meantime, the connotation of public art will arouse students and faculty’s empathy towards it and thus achieve the goal of improving the soft power of campus culture.Based on enormous relevant research material, this paper analyzes the basic features of public art of higher education institutions which are for decoration, culture, education participation and therefore offers the theoretical basis to the design of public art of higher education institutions. Besides, this paper analyzes the practical problems that the current public art of higher education institutions faces such as insufficiency in inheriting campus culture, the exhibition of particular campus characteristics, people-oriented design, etc. This paper also explores the reasons that cause the above phenomenon and through the comparisons among a great number of excellent public art of domestic or foreign higher education institutions, the application patternof campus culture in public art of higher education institutions can be concluded. Lastly, in the setting of Nanjing University of Science and Technology, through analyzing and researching the current situation of public art on campus, this paper is intended to summarize the campus culture that is integrated with the characteristics of Nanjing University of Science and Technology and based on that, new inspirations can be instilled into the current effort to design public art.
