In twenty-first Century, great changes have taken place in thegeo-economical and geo-political landscape of East Asia: the rapiddevelopment and rise of China, the perpetuation of economic stagnationin Japan, and the subsequent ascent of conservative forces in Japanesepolitics. Facing the new challenges engendered by these developments,Japan is trying to adjust its strategy in East Asia, a strategy mainlyfocused on countering the rising influence of China in the region. In2001April, Junichiro Koizumi was elected Prime Minister of Japan whostrived hard to strengthen Japanese leadership position in East Asia. InSeptember2006, Abe Shinzo was elected the Prime Minister of Japan. SoonJapan entered the period of frequent change of government.Japanese government strategy of East Asian, which is basicallycentered on adopting a tough attitude towards China, was formulated inthe The Koizumi government period. This trend of being tough on Chinahas continued since then. In2010September, the outbreak of the"collision incident", Japan has taken a series of tough policy measures.In2011, the Noda Yosihiko Administration introduced the so-called"nationalization of Diaoyu islands". In2012December, Abe Shinzo was reelected Prime Minister of Japan, giving an impetus to Japanese East Asianstrategy. China has also taken the military combat readiness, politicalconfrontation policy.Since the new period, due to external, for instance the strengtheningof US-Japan alliance, Japan made the adjustment to its East Asia strategy,Japan’s East Asian strategy covet regional hegemony for Japan in theregion. In this strategy, Japan also incorporated China policyadjustments. From the change of policy towards China, Japan China strategic form Japan’s East Asian strategy center. The research of thispaper revolves around the Japan’s East Asian strategy, particularly thenew policy adjustments regarding China under the new period.
