A Study On The Development And Influence Of The Relationship Between The EU And The Mekong Region After The Cold War

With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the ending of the Cold War in1990, only super power and multi-great power became the basic pattern of the international relations after the Cold War. The US-led NATO continued the eastward expansion and strengthened its position in the European affairs. But all these things US did run counter to the EU’s desire for the independence. In order to promote its own development and contain, the US, the EU tried hard to strengthen their economic and political presence in the Mekong region. The EU strengthens its cooperation with the countries in Mekong region in political, economic, social and cultural fields. The EU’s policies to Mekong region produce different effects to the countries in Mekong region, China and itself. In this paper, by studying EU’s policies to Mekong region and the development process of the relations between the EU and the Mekong region countries, I research the possible impact of these policies may arise to China.In this paper, the writer collected the content of the EU’s policy to Mekong region, and analyzed the factors may produce an effect on the introduction of these policies. And the writer analyzed the development process of the relations between EU and the countries at Mekong region in political, economic, social and cultural fields. And on this basis, the writer studied this development of the relations’effect to EU, countries in the Mekong region and China.By all these inductions and analysis, the writer believes that EU’s policy to Mekong region can improve its image in this region and enhance its international prestige and influence, so that EU can get more economic and political interests in the long term. At the same time, EU’s participation in a variety of matters of this region can help the countries in this region to eradicate poverty, promote the development of economy peace and stability. As to the influence to China, the writer mainly analyzes the negative impact of the development of relations between the EU and the Mekong region may bring. And I think China should solve the problems left in Mekong region before, find a good balance between the political, economic and cultural issues. At the same time, China should make certain its own interest in the bilateral relations, multilateral and inter-regional levels. China should make a positive response to the negative impacts, solve the problems and improve its relations with EU and the countries in the Mekong region.
