The networks of most enterprises consist of equipments operating systems and application processes that supplied by different vendor. Each vendor uses network management system based on specific network management protocol to manage their products. All of this makes network management become more complicated. Obviously, consistency of protocols is the key of decreasing the cost of network management and reducing the complication of network management system.Today, two prevalent network management protocols exist that are Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP). SNMP, which was ready to implement and easy to use, is ubiquitous in TCP/IP-based network. But the disadvantages of SNMP are weak security features and simple of functionality. CMIP has sufficient semantics and the elegant object-oriented architecture, which was adopted merely by Telecommunications Management Network. If it is recognized that each has its own strengths, then the benefits of an integrated management solution can be gained thus offering a coherent view of the managed network.First of all, the paper draws comparisons between SNMP and CMIP at management information models the naming of managed object instance application functionality and communications. Afterward, the paper analyses existent approaches of SNMP and CMIP integration, i.e. coexistence and interworking. As SNMP has become the accepted standard with the slowly popularization of CMIP-based equipment, the paper has presents the design of a proxy, that can be inserted between an SNMP-based manager and CMIP-based agent. The paper put as much emphasis on mapping, between SNMP and CMIP, of managed information models, the naming of managed objects and user datagram unit. For additional CMIS functionalities have to be carried over to the SNMP environment, the proxy must supply some especial services enumerated by the paper. The paper also designs some data structures which can be used in proxy for management information search. This proxy model can manage CMIP-based equipment in the SNMP environment without changing that, protect investment of company and save time of development of application.
