With the development of the digital video coding technology, many applications are constantly made and applied. In numerous coding schemes, H.264 is the most effective one.H.264 is a new generation of video coding standard, developed by the joint of ITU-T and ISO. Comparing with H.263 and MPEG-4, it saves respectively 50% and 20% of the bit stream, in the situation that the reconstructed image quality is the same. This is very suitable for solving the problem that the domestic operators have excessive users, but not enough bandwidth resources.However, the new issue of the soaring computational complexity is brought at the same time by the increase of the coding efficiency. It is a tremendous obstacle in H.264 embedded applications.Therefore, in order to solve this problem, the paper uses high-performance DM642 as platform for H.264 software transplantation and optimization. It first introduces H.264 principle and DSP platform, and then describes the system's four modules: the transplantation and optimization of H.264 software, PCI driver, the playback of YUV reconstructed images and DSP bootloader. After optimization, the codec speed has been greatly improved. The four modules constitute a PCI card with H.264 codec function.
