Since two decades of reform, Ningbo port has a good development trend as one of the four deep-water ports in China. In 2004 with cargo throughput exceeding 220,000,000 tons, it is the second-largest port in China, second only to Shanghai;with container throughput breaking through 4,000,000 TEU, it is the fourth-largest and has a year-on-year increase of more than 44.5%, while the grow rate is the first one in the container ports in the past 6 years. With the speedy progress in the international economic integration and China's WTO accession, ports play a more and more important role in national economy and social development. Under the new circumstances, how Ningbo port can keep exerting its function and ascendancy, speed up its growth to face challenge, hasten development together with Ningbo city and speed up regional economy, provide the better service for the national economy, has been a vital strategic question that the Ningbo port now faces. In this paper, based on the research of ports' growth rule, I attempt to propose strategic goals that fit Ningbo port's future development, and to achieve these goals I list some strategic measures and suggestions, through the analysis of its status, function in the colony, its merit/ demerit, and its status in the regional economic growth.
