Traffic jam is becoming a very urgent issue which restricts the city development. China has high density of urban population and limited resources of road space. It determines the ways that regard the urban mass transit system as the priority is the inevitable choice. It can lessen the traffic jam and keep the urban communication sustainable development.The layout of modern urban mass transit system not only solves the traffic issue, but also facilitates the urban's rebuilding and development. The development of the urban mass transit system should help to achieve the city sustainable development step by step. It is a strategy choice and an effective ways to solve the metropolis communication conflict.The first underground was used at Beijing in 1965, which was the prelude of the Chinese rail transit system. Now, Shanghai and Guangzhou, Shenzhen have the metro system. More than other 30 cities also develop its urban mass transit system plan. They are in the different stages. The urban mass transit system becomes the main measure to solve the traffic jam and the connection of the interurban.The paper starts from the history of the urban mass transit system. The content integrates it's the situation and character of the overseas and domestic. The paper also studies its direction and the effect to the society and economy based on the Chinese urban mass transit system actuality. The conclusion points out that the development of the urban mass transit system should match to the uniform urban layout and the economy level. It should integrate the geography, scenery and population, economy etc. into a whole. The layout need to fit for the urban's future. The layout should include the intercity plan during the urban mass transit system development. This can accelerate the region and country economic prosper. The study also includes the demonstration analysis, which is theintercity case of the pearl of the Yangtze River. At last, the paper gives some proposal about the development from the sustainable point.
