With the development of Chinese manufacturing industry, more and more companies have increasingly realized that knowledge has become the critical production factor. Human capital has become the most important capital for company instead of traditional physical capital. Companies have to take continuous human resource training as an important method to enhance their competitive powers. Structured on–the-job training (S-OJT) is one of the human resource training programs by which new comers or employees receive the necessary skills step-by-step in the workplace from the experienced workers or professionals. It has become more and more popular in manufacturing company especially for the production and technical positions. It is of significance for company to establish an S-OJT system to efficiently improve and diversify employees'professional skills. Beginning with S-OJT relevant concepts, the paper makes a review upon the OJT theory, introduces the meaning of S-OJT, and analyzes the difference between the S-OJT and the non S-OJT. It discusses an appropriate process to establish S-OJT system, which consists of the need analysis, the establishment of training plan, the training course design, the implementation of program and the evaluation of training result. Compared with foreign company in training participation rate and training investment, the paper analyzes the current situation of China manufacturing company, points out some issues of OJT and emphasizes the importance for company to perform the S-OJT system. Then, it gives a case study of one company which has been establishing the S-OJT system. The paper discusses the administrative measures and the process of its S-OJT system, and summarizes the advantages and disadvantages. In conclusion, the paper puts forward several solutions in regard to current issues of the OJT.
