Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), under the present conditions of economic globalization and localization, play an important role in China's national economy, and even become a mainstay in the achievement of export. This thesis, based on the related theories of SMEs and international trade, gives a profound analysis of the SMEs' great impact, especially their advantages and beneficial effects on China's export trade, and thus the conclusion is made that the immediate significance of the expansion of SMEs can fully attained for China's sustainable development in export, and even the whole economy. Meanwhile, this thesis also analyzes the factors that set limitation to the expansion of SMEs in Wuhan and thus puts forward the strategies at macroscopic, intermediate and microscopic levels to promote Wuhan's SMEs export expansion on the basis of the SMEs' experience of many other areas and countries.This thesis includes four chapters together with a preface.Chapter one of the thesis make a brief introduction on the methods of SME classification and definition of SMEs. Brief remarks made in this part point out that the current classification of enterprise scale in China can not match the development of socialist market economy. It is necessary to reform the prevailing method of enterprise classification. The author further analyses the prospects of the development of modern SMEs.Chapter two of this thesis examines the experience of SMEs development in China,especially since the government adopt the policy of "open up to the outside world" after the end of "culture revolution" and the role of SMEs in the national economy together with its strategic functions and impacts in various aspects of China's economic and social life.Chapter three first make a review into the rapid development of Wuhan's export trade since 1990s,and discuss with data analyses the necessity and the possibility for Wuhan to further promote its exportation in the years to come with a view to ensure the endurable and stable growth of national economy. On this basis, the author analyses the relationship between Wuhan's comparative advantage based on factor endowments and its export trade.Chapter four explores the prospective role of SMEs in the growth of the national economy of China in the coming years, and concern on policy measurements which lead to a sustainable growth of SMEs exports by assuring that SMEs, especially inindustrial sector grow up efficiently, to encourage a more diversified pattern of highly value-added exports, to allow more SMEs have a direct connection with the outside world and to benefit from them, to improve market-ariented service for SMEs, including financing, information providing, personal training, etczThe conclusion is that the reason behind the rapid development of Wuhan's export trade during past ten years is the effective utilization of the comparative advantage based on abundant labor resource. Furthermore, the author makes some efforts to demonstrate that export-oriented SMEs in industrial sector is the most effective way to fully exploit Wuhan's comparative advantage.
