"Recreation" was first included as one of the four main contents (living, industry, recreation and transportation) in city planning by Athens Charter at the International Congress of Modem Architecture (CIAM, 1933) in 1933, which reflects that "recreation" has been increasingly becoming one of the main functions of the city. However, in the urban development of China, the need for leisure and recreation by residents has not been well satisfied. Residents' leisure time activities are mainly launched at family. The sites for outdoor recreation are not used to the full. There is an unbalanced conflict between the supply and demand of urban recreation. Furthermore, China is in the stage of rapid development of urbanization and urban expansion, the population in the city has increased sharply, which results in the city space more crowded, thus is the overuse of land resources, and the direct or indirect impact on the change of the recreational space. With the urban spatial structure for recreation as a focus, this paper expounds its possibly ideal spatial forms. The thesis is organized into five chapters: following a literature review, an objective assessment of the existing research at question is presented. In the second chapter, the relationship between leisure, recreation and tourism is differentiated and analyzed, and the main factors composing the urban spatial structure of recreation and its basic shapes and types are elaborated. The third chapter discusses the characteristics of the spatial structure of urban recreation in demand and supply, analyzes their formation factors, and puts forward an ideal model for the spatial structure of recreation. A case study is provided in the fourth chapter, which investigates the distribution, usage of recreation sites in Dalian's main city area, and the characteristics of recreationists' needs in the city. Conflicts between supply and demand of recreation sites are analyzed, followed by the structural classification and whole pattern of the city recreational space. Optimized strategies for the spatial structure of the city are put forward. Conclusions and recommendations derived from the analysis are also offered in the final chapter.
