City is the sign of human civilization, and the result of social and economic development. Urbanization, brought by the industrial revolution and the information revolution, develops so rapidly that it has become the melody of economy since several centuries. As a result, many scholars show great interest in it. Urbanization accelerates the development of society and economy, meanwhile, it also brings many negative effects. Under the special situation in China, in order to figure out how to choose the practical path of urbanization, and how to solve the arisen problems of it, we should theoretically lucubrate such problems as the essence of urbanization, the effects of urbanization on rural areas, and the functional mechanism between cities and rural areas. Former theory researches mostly focus on urbanization and its effects from macro perspective. However, for the further study of the theory of urbanization and the select of operable path of it, it is a pity that households are overlooked, who are the most important interest body and the most direct participant body. Starting with above accounts, the dissertation firstly analyses two typical cases, then theoretically generalizes the common effects of urbanization on rural areas. For the sake of lucubrating the effects, the paper tries to divide the effects into different types, and studies the functional mechanism respectively. The dissertation is divided into six chapters.Chapter one firstly introduces the background of the research from the course of urbanization, the actuality of rural areas and national policies.Then it presents the start of the research. Finally, it retrospects such pertinent studies as follows: theory of the development of urbanization, theory of the economic development of rural areas, theory of balanced development between cities and rural areas, advancement of theory of urbanization in China, and study of effects of urbanization on rural areas.Chapter two constructs the research logic, and points out the significance and value.
