The issue of rural—household differentiation in coastal areas forms its own characteristics in its more than 20 years of development. These characteristics are representative comparing to eastern and western areas. The timely summary of these characteristics will enable us to fully understand rural household, the microcosmic main part of rural economics. Further more, the research on the affecting reasons of these characteristics will help government formulate relevant policies theoretically.With such purpose, this paper carries out a systematic research on the issue of rural—household differentiation in coastal areas. On the basis of demonstration, the paper first analyzes definitions and types of rural—household, different standards of different rural households and relevant theories according to criterions. Then the paper expounds that when and where the rural—household differentiation in coastal areas starts and to what degrees the rural household differentiated. At last, the paper concludes differentiated characteristics and their affecting reasons. The thesis is divided into six chapters according to the structure.The prelude expounds the background and objectives of this paper, defines relevant definitions of rural—household differentiation, and provides the research ideas and methods and existing problems and innovations.Chapter one reviews the relevant theories of rural—household differentiation such as institutional economics and farmer action theory and introduces the research status in quo in home and abroad.Chapter two is a historic review of rural—household differentiation in coastal areas. The chapter focuses the attention on when and where the rural—household differentiation in coastal area starts.Chapter three is devoted to describe the patterns of rural—household differentiation from different angles including differentiation degrees, differentiation scope, and differentiation modes. The chapter also provides a theoretical explanation to the phenomenon of rural—household differentiation in coastal areas.Chapter four is a research on the characteristics of rural—household differentiation including seven aspects: the volatility of the rural-household differentiation, the regional concentration of the rural-household differentiation in occupation, the industrialization of farmers, the incoming's imbalance in industry and agriculture, the differences between differentiation patterns and structures, rural household urbanization and rural household part time farming.Chapter five explores the affecting reasons of rural—household differentiation in coastal areas from external and internal aspects. The external reasons of management circumstance includes implementation of family contract responsibility system, the development of non—agricultural economy, the favorable hardware facilities of coastal areas, and the effect of geographical diversities. The internal reasons lie on to what degree the farmers want to increase their incomes, how long they receive the education, the acres of cultivated lands, the difference of occupations, assets and social background, the non—agricultural skills and the structure of family's labor force. Finally, the paper lists several suggestions in light of these external and internal reasons with the hope to help relevant decision—making department formulate relevant policies.
