Since 1990' s last century, after opening and reform, China has stepped into the transition period of economic reform. Urban transformation has received large focus from the Chinese Geography Science.Commerce is one of the basic factors in urban system. Through the case study of Shanghai, the paper discusses the ordinary pattern, the internal mechanism and the development tendency of commercial space evolution in large cities under the background of the urban transformation.This paper analyses the commercial space evolution from three aspects: the distribution of commercial centers, the hierarchical structure and the internal spatial structure of different scale commercial center.The research begins in designating the built-up area in 2006 of Shanghai according to the land-use map and the administrative division.On the first step, the article sets up some conditions to add up the commercial centers in Shanghai and it can be found that 137 statistical commercial centers are within the study . zone. Throughout the superposition analysis, it is concluded that more than 50% of commercial centers are in the urban new tract and fringe areas from 1982 to 2006.On the second step, these 137 commercial centers are divided into three groups according some certain retailing types, which are distribution in these commercial centers. These indices of retailing types are department store, shopping center, supermarket, convenience store and general merchandise store.
