Finance has become more and more important in the modern economy, especially the commercial bank, which is the most comprehensive, influential and basic financial institution in the financial system. Because of the economic globalization, capital flows should be more and more active, and as a result, it will put forward higher requirements on the service of the commercial bank. Since the nineteen nineties, under the guidance of the national strategy, Shanghai has become the financial center, giving an emphasis on the financial industry, which led to the large-scale development of the banking sector, with the agencies throughout various districts and counties. Since the reform and opening, China fully opened to foreign banks, so various foreign banks have entered the Chinese market. Beside foreign banks, Chinese banks also presented the diversified development, with the increasing strength. In addition, the development of the technology also brought new vigor and vitality into the banking institutions. Nowadays, within a limited region, many kinds of commercial banks are facing a fierce competition. In these circumstances, researches on the spatial distribution of the commercial banks in Shanghai are necessary. This paper mainly researches on the spatial distribution of commercial banks in Shanghai. First of all, this paper used the indoor research to summarize the development of commercial banks in Shanghai, with the help of lots of related research achievements, it made the latest progress. Secondly, based on the correlated theories of corporate geography, city geography and financial geography, together with the empirical cases, it gave an analysis on the spatial pattern of commercial banks in Shanghai. During the empirical research, many analytic techniques have been used, for example, the Lorenz curve, the correlation analysis and other mathematical methods. SPSS, CorelDRAW, ARCGIS and other tools were also for the spatial data collection, which aimed to sum up the causes and the influencing factors that led to the present spatial distribution in Shanghai.Through the research discovery, the spatial distribution of commercial banks in Shanghai has the following characteristics. Firstly, the whole spatial pattern showed multi-core layer. Secondly, it gave priority on the regional economic development center. Thirdly, it also gave priority on the regional administrative center. In addition, this paper also gave the explicit analysis on different banks and different banking agencies, and it found out that different banks have different features in spatial distribution. Furthermore, the factors that caused this space layout can be summarized into five aspects:economic factors, demographic factors, government factor, path dependence and the internal factors of the banks.Based on the regional perspective, this paper studied the spatial layout of banks in the region area. Through this research, it summarized the spatial behavior of commercial banks and analyzed influence factors, which not only do help for banks to improve their competitiveness through institutional construction, but also give the basic theory for regional banks to form a reasonable spatial pattern. At the same time, because banks are special enterprises, researches on the spatial behavior can also enrich the theory and empirical research on enterprise geography.
