Through paper-process, tobacco stem, powder are made as recombinant product whosecharacteristic is close to natural tobacco. Because of the special properties of the tobacco rawmaterial and the special requirements of the production process of reconstituted tobacco, thetraditional pulping technology is not suitable for the production process of paper-processreconstituted tobacco. As a result, on the base of the analysis of the characteristic of tobacooraw material, this paper studied the pulp’s characteristic after pulping, including the structuralchanges of the various components in pulp and fiber morphology changes, finally this paperalso studied the influence of the beating degree and the ratio of different slurry on the surfacestructure and physical properties of substrate.Firstly, the characteristic of paper-process tobacco raw material were studied in thispaper. The result showed: the holocellulose content of tobacco stem and powder were verylow, were27.04%and24.11%respectively, the hot water extractive content were particularlyhigh, reached to53.72%and58.92%respectively. After hot water extraction, solublesubstance which attached to the cell walls and in the cell cavity of tobacco stem and powder, such as vegetable base, pectic substances, were dissolved by hot water, fiber cells andparenchyma cells were clearly naked, the ductal cell surface became rough. In addition, afterdissociated by the glacial acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide solution, the fiber cell contentwas low, and the fiber weighted length was short, were0.76mm and0.53mm respectively;non-fiber elements mainly includes parenchyma cells and ductal cell, they were in everyshapes, the content of non-fiber elements was really high, its fines content were as high as20.6%and38.4%respectively.Secondly, the tobacco stem and powder were beated by laboratory PFI machine, and thecharacteristic of the pulp after beating were studied. The results showed: after beating, fiberswere peeled off from fasciculus of tobacco stem pulp gradually, fibrillated obviously, at thesame time, fibers were cut into small fragments and extruded forming deformation. But evenat a high beating degree, fasciculus wouldn’t be dissociated into single fibers, parenchymacells and ductal cells were ground broken, which lead to small components increased greatly, this was the main cause of the pulp beating degree rising. When the beating degree rose from10.2°SR up to35.4°SR, the fiber weighted length decreased from0.73mm down to0.45mm, fell by38.4%, fines content increased from62.3%up to70.3%. The irregular fragmentsin tobacco powder pulp were smashed into a large number of small pieces, and the veins of high fiber content gradually exposed, and there was almost no fibrillated of the fibers, whenthe beating degree rose from14.2°SR up to51.0°SR, the fiber weighted length decreasedfrom0.55mm down to0.34mm, fell by38.2%, fines content increased from70.5%up to75.1%. In addition, the width of the tobacco stem and powder pulp gradually rose, coarseness, curl index and kink index gradually decreased with the increasing of beating degree. Finally, the influence of pulp beating degree and the ratio of different slurries on thesubstrate surface structure and physical performance. The results showed: the substratesurface structure was highly rough when the pulp was at low beating degree, the fibers wasinterweaved loose, with a large number of irregular holes. With the increase of beating degree, substrate surface became smooth, fiber fibrillated obviously, fibers were tightly combined, with low porosity. The results also showed: the best beating degree of tobacco stem andpowder were35.4°SR and51.0°SR respectively, the best wood pulp additive amount was6%, the best ratio of tobacco stem and powder pulp was5:5, at this point the substrate tensileindex was15.1N·m/g, thickness was2.71cm3/g, porosity was3.62mu m/(Pa·s), Cobb10value was34.13g/m2.
