With the wide application of welding technology in the manufacturing, higher requestbrings to welding machines. There are kinds of weld-seam types like A, B, C, D onpressure vessel, and welding machines of different types and specification are demandedaccording to the different structure of workpieces. To improve the efficiency of design andthe flexibility of numerical control welding machines, the idea of modularization isapplied to the design of CNC welding machines. The main research contents of the paperare as follows:1. Based on the study of heat exchangers and tube plates, the weld-seam types andwelded joints on them are analyzed. The development of automatic welding equipments inthe domestic and overseas is summarized, and the related theory about the concept,superiority, process of modular design is studied.2. Based on the research of division and creation of module and functionaldecomposition, the functional decomposition and module division of CNC weldingmachines are accomplished. And the mapping from functional modules to structuremodules is set up.3. The structure of CNC welding machines including pedestal, column, beam andwelding head is remodeled, designed, and serialized. Also auxiliary functional moduleswhich are necessary during welding are studied.4. Based on the function and geometrical features, the design of interfaces betweenmodules is accomplished, which can ensure the connection and meshing between themodules.5. Based on the open CNC welding system of PC, the whole CNC system of weldingis designed, and modularized. And the hardware structure and its interfaces are designed,the software modules are divided, and the structures of it are designed.
