In this study, tryptophan content, the degree of lipid peroxidation, SEM photograph of hair fiber surface and color change, as well as the common assessment methods such as protein damage and breaking work, were used to improve the evaluation system about hair care productions reducing photo oxidation damage. Experiments are divided into three parts: oil materials, sunscreens, plant extract. The adsorptions of sunscreens and plant extract have been also studied. Different formulations were applied on different hair groups, then the protein loss、tryptophan content, degree of lipid peroxidation, total color change, breaking work and the surface condition of hair in different groups were studied. Results showed, almond oil can effectively improve tryptophan content, breaking work, and reduce protein loss, color change and lipid peroxidation, as almond oil contains a variety of biological active ingredients, which can absorb ultraviolet light, clear free radicals, and reduce the damage degree. Silicone oil has less effect on lipid and tryptophan, but has some protection to protein and breaking work. When evaluating the total color change, silicone has better protection efficacy than vegetable oil. In all, almond oil had better general protection effect than silicone on anti-photo damage of hair. Silicone had a more significant effect on color protection. This research also studied the anti-photo oxidation damage efficacy of sunscreens: benzophenone-3and octyl methoxycinn mate were applied on different hair groups, then the protein loss, tryptophan content, degree of lipid peroxidation, total color change, breaking work and the surface condition of hair in different groups were studied. Results showed, octyl methoxycinn as one UVB sunscreen had significant protection efficacy on protein, tryptophan, color and surface of hair. Benzophenone-3as one UVA sunscreen had better protection efficacy on lipid in inner hair. They both provide protection on breaking work. When compounding silicone oil with sunscreens, a better absorption of sunscreen was observed, and the absorption of benzophenone-3and octyl methoxycinn were increased slightly. The protection efficacy of compounding formulations had a better protection on protein, tryptophan, lipid, color and breaking work. It indicated that synergistic effect between sunscreens and silicone oil. Finally, the article design a plant extract formulation, milk thistle extract were developed in hair care formulation applied on hair to study the protection efficacy on protein, tryptophan, lipid, color, breaking work and the surface condition. The main active material exists in milk thistle extract is flavonoids, which can absorb uv radiations, clear free radicals and reduce the photo oxidation on structural material in hair. Results showed, compared with the blank group, the formulation contains milk thistle extract protect48.21%protein,57.01%lipid,40.93%tryptophan,42.59%breaking work and30.34%color of hair, indicating that milk thistle extract has a significant protection effect on photo damage to hair. When compounding silicone with milk thistle extract, no improvement on protection effect to hair was observed. It may be due to the ethanol in plant extract, and non-ionic silicone emulsion is not soluble in ethanol. So a synergistic protective effect was expected, that was not observed.
