Atmospheric environment is one of the important environments that human beingneeds to survive. With the rapid growth of economics as well as acceleratingdevelopment of industrialization and urbanization, atmospheric environment has beendestroyed seriously in recent years. The emission of all kinds of air pollutants areincreasing, leading to higher concentration of pollutants in the air, which is a vitalthreaten to the survival and development of human. Air pollution has become a severeproblem in the world and attracted much attention. Therefore, it is an urgent task tobuild an air pollution monitoring system.With the rapid development of wireless sensor networks, based on the Zigbeetechnique, an air pollution monitoring system is designed in this thesis to monitor airpollutants efficiently in real time. With the advantages of low power consumption, lowcost and convenient networking, Zigbee are widely used in wireless sensor networkapplications. In this thesis, the background and significance of the air pollutionmonitoring are introduced, as well as the theoretical principle of Zigbee technique andits networking modes. Based on the requirements of practical air pollution monitoring,the entire design scheme are proposed, with the detail description of the hardwarecircuit and software coding of the system.The XBee-PRO S2module is chosen in the system to be the wireless networkingmodule. STM32microcontroller is used as the central control chip, which, together withsensors, constructs a monitoring node. The data collected from sensors are processed bythe microcontroller first and then sent to the XBee-PRO S2module by serialcommunication protocol. After that, wireless sensor network transmits the data to dataconcentrator, which is composed of Zigbee module, microcontroller and GPRS module.The data concentrator relays the data to remote server by GPRS. As the result, users caninquire data they are interested in by accessing the server through client applications.The future work includes the improvement of each functional module to make thewhole system more reliable. Another important work is to design the data analysisplatform for different user applications.
