As the development of large scale shipping technology and space technology, with theexploitation of new energy resources and marine resources, equipments required bymechanical industry of China are larger in size and more demanding in performance. Themarket calls for more heavy duty and super heavy duty machines. To meet the needs ofdevelopment of heavy duty machine of China and the demand of domestic market,development of super heavy duty CNC gantry movable boring and milling machine becomesessential.This thesis describes the demand of super heavy duty CNC gantry movable boring andmilling machine machine tools in domestic market and the importance of designing anddevelopment of machine tool product in manufacturing industry. It details the whole processof designing and development of super heavy duty CNC gantry movable boring and millingmachine in aspects of whole machine scheme, design of structural components, machinefeeding and hydraulic control system. Correspondent technical solutions are given as per theimportant and difficult points found during machine designing and developing.In respect of features of large in scale and difficult in assembly and commissioning ofsuper heavy duty machine, main reasons affecting machine accuracy are studied and relatedassembly and adjustment structures are designed to ensure that machine accuracy meetsrelated standards; modeling and finite element analysis are carried out to key componentswith3-D analysis software for structure feature study and planning of difficult structures.Calculations are carried out with calculation software as per actual circumstances. Keypositions of component structure are found by comparison of calculation results. By datacalculation and verification in detail and studying the structural features of each feeding mode,the most feasible and reliable plan is designed and applied in the technology of high speedtravel of super heavy duty gantry. By methods of designing, calculation, verification and testdata inspection, the feasibility of technical proposal is verified to ensure that developing superheavy duty gantry movable boring and milling machine is possible and the machine cansatisfy customer’s machining demand.In this thesis, difficult and important points during design and developing of super heavyduty machine are studied, which could be served as technical guidance to the design anddevelopment of similar type of super heavy duty machines. The successful design andmanufacturing of super heavy duty gantry movable boring and milling machine does not only meet the demand of customer, but also provide theoretical basis and project example for thedesign and development of super heavy duty machines.
