Stainless steel buttering is a special form of welded joints, although there are used insome international projects, but in China it has not been extensively used, it is not defined inrelevant national standards. The buttering is a welding technology to get a different materialfrom the base metal by cladding a buttering layer. It has a very useful to avoid heat treatmentfor special components, to improve dissimilar base metal welding ability, to get a specialcomposition and so on.This paper is based on domestic first EPR-type MSR for third-generation nuclear powerplant project constructed by a nuclear power plant equipment manufacturer to researchstainless steel buttering technology on the typical Cr-Mo steel SA-387Gr.12CL2. Studyingweldability of SA-387Gr.12CL2particularly analysis its crack tendency from analysis itschemical composition and mechanical properties. Then planning the filler material and weldprocesses based on production requirements for the buttering and find out the right weldingparameters by orthogonal tests. Finally, find out a practical welding technology according to aseries of tests and studies such as analysis of the chemical composition of the specimen,tensile mechanical properties, bending tests, impact tests, intergranular corrosion tests andmacroµ metallurgical analysis.
