Belt conveyor was widely used in the various modern transportationoperations as the ideal bulk material transport equipment. The problem ofdynamics and control had been attracted more and more attention by all unitswith the development of belt conveyor towards large capacity, high speed andlong distance, especially the dynamic phenomena under the unsteady workingconditions such as starting and braking phrases.Under the unstable working condition, belt conveyor would be easy togenerate big longitudinal vibration and dynamic tension due to the impact ofexternal excitation, which superimposed with the static tension, resulting in toobig or too small partial tension in the viscoelastic conveyor belt in order totrigger accidents, huge personnel and property losses. Due to the complexity ofviscoelastic modeling and solution for belt conveyor, most researchers adoptedthe elastic continuous or discrete method and the viscoelastic discrete method toanalyze the dynamic problems. The belt rarely was regarded as the viscoelasticbody to construct its continuous model. Therefor it was necessary to fullyconsider the impact of belt viscidity and flexibility on dynamic performance of belt conveyor.The paper proposed that the dynamic characteristic equation of viscoelasticcontinuity for the head driven and tail hydraulic automatic take-up belt conveyorwas established on the generalized coordinate system according to theHamilton’s principle and the approximate analytical solution was derived byemploying the homogenized boundary and the separated variable method on thebase of the Duhamel principle. Meanwhile, the expressions of the beltconveyor’s dynamic acceleration and tension response were developed under thedifferent acceleration excitations in the starting phrase.Meanwhile, the change rules were determined by the MATLAB computersimulation for the acceleration and tension responses of the belt conveyor underthe different starting times with different acceleration ways, which contributedto obtaining the best starting model and starting time control strategy foreffective restriction of vibration and shock when belt conveyor started, reducingthe dynamic tension in the starting phrase of belt conveyor to some extent andthe probability of accidents.Eventually, the dynamic experiments of acceleration and tension wereconducted based on building the simulated system of belt conveyor, whichshowed that the extension of starting time could effectively guarantee thestability of the belt conveyor system starting and reduced the tension, furthervalidating the correctness of theoretical analysis and simulation study.
