With the Smart Substation be promoted in the nationwide, the investment between smart substation and conventional substation in the life cycle becomes an important issue. This paper briefly introduces the concept of life cycle cost. The LCC is composed of investment cost, operation cost, fault cost and discarded cost. According to substation operation experiences during the life cycle and the characteristics of smart substation, this paper compares primary and secondary equipments using conditions in the smart substation with those in the conventional substation during the life cycle. The primary equipments include power transformers,500kV HGIS and 220kV HGIS, and the secondary equipments include automatic system of substation, protection equipments and auxiliary equipments. This paper analyzes and compares life cycle costs of equipments in two substation modes respectively, draws the following conclusions:1) Owing to utilization of a great deal smart combinations, the investments of smart substation will be more than conventional substation. With smart combination technology growing up gradually, the differences between conventional substation and smart substation will tend to reduce.2) the operation cost of smart substation will have an advantage of those of conventional substation.3) The smart equipments have superiority over conventional equipments with aspects of forced outage rate, scheduled outage rate and nonscheduled outage rate, and so on, and fault costs will decrease.4) The discarded costs of smart substation are same as those of conventional substation.5) The life cycle costs are more economic than those of conventional substation during thirty years.
