Our country, one of the largest fruit producing countries in the world, owns the largest sown area, and is suitable for cultivation of plenty fruit species. In spite of the advantage in resources and production, our country is not a big exporter of fruit. Only about 2% of the production is for export. Japan is one of the largest importers of China's fruit. In recent years, some new features suggest themselves in China's fruit export to Japan: The volume of our fruit export to Japan kept rising, but its proportion of total fruit export was in a downward trend; The trade volume of fresh fruit exported decreased year after year, but that of fruit juice showed a strong rising trend. Why does this phenomenon prompt out? What internal and external factors have influenced China's fruit export to Japan? The study of these factors will help to suggest for the promotion of China's fruit export.First, this article introduces the relevant background and significance of this study, literature review and innovation, and then explains the condition of China's fruit export to Japan and Japan's fruit import in the last twenty years. After that, this article choose trade gravity model and constant market share model to study respectively the factors influencing the trade flow and export growth of China's fruit export to Japan, and then analyzes the competitiveness of China's fruit in Japan's market from two aspects of price and non-price. At last, it gives a review of the whole article and gives proposals.By empirical analyses, this research draws mainly the following conclusions : (1) the factors influencing the trade flow of China's fruit export to Japan include Japan's and China's total amount of economic output and bilateral exchange rate. Their coefficients are 1.46, 0.46and -0.37 respectively. For farmers and fruit exporters, these three factors are all external factors, and can't be controlled. (2) the factors influencing the export growth of China's fruit export to Japan include Japan's demand for import, China's export structure, competitiveness of fruit and mutual effect of demand and competitiveness. Export structure and competitiveness are internal factors, and could be controlled. Before 2002, the factor of competitiveness had contributed the most to export growth, and the secondly important factor was demand, and the thirdly was export structure. Since 2002, the contribution of competitiveness has declined, and the main reason is because of unreasonable product structure. The proportion of primarily processed fruit is too high, and that of fruit juice is relatively too low. (3) As showed by RCA index of different fruit products, the competitiveness of fresh fruit is weak; primarily processed fruit is competitive in Japanese market, but its competitiveness is in declining state; the competitiveness of fruit juice has been promoted. (4) China has advantages in export price, cost of production and transportation fee, but has disadvantage in tariff and product quality.
