Wei River, the largest tributary of the Yellow River, is such a spatial vector and fundation of Tianshui-Guanzhong economic zone, as well as a choke point to connect the Eurasia conti-nental bridge, connect with economic geographical location where the east links the west.It pl-ays an important and strategic role economic and social development in the west area. Resear-ches on spatial differences of Wei valley economy, has important theoretical and practical val-ue to optimize its economic spatial development, stimulate its economy, and realize western r-egion's economic well coordinated and sustainable development. Therefore, this paper appli-ed systematic scientific theories and methodology to 82 counties and districts of Wei valley, in-cluding human-economic geography, regional economics, and geographical information scie-nce; A systematic study of spatial dissimilarity of Wei valley economy was carried out quantit atively and qualitatively.(1) Domestic and international research progress and basic theories was summarized on theory. Results showed that current researches focused on content, structure,process,mechanis-m, development and management of spatial dissimilarity of valley economy, which were fulfi-lled and productive, but fewer results about spatial difference of valley economy oflessdevelo-ped western regions, especially the lack of comprehensive and systematic study of spatial dis-similarity of Wei valley economic outcomes; research methods were traditional, single,resear-ch scale to be further transformed. This paper adopted theoretical essence of human-ecnomic geography, regional economics, geographical information science and other disciplines, to bui-ld a theoretical foundation for watershed study of spatial difference of valley economy, e.g. regional differences and their causes, spatial structure and its optimization, spatial theory of fu-nctional areas.(2) This paper summarized identification theories and quantitative methodologies of econ-omic spatial structure type. Studies suggest that the spatial dissimilarity of valley economy sh -ould be the high degree of unity of valley pattern and process, the final result of interacttion among various valley economic object, and the economic spatial structure type should be spec-ific reflection of valley spatial dissimilarity performance. The essence to identify the valley e-conomic spatial structure type was to distinguish growth poles and non-growth pole. Beneath county scale, growth poles had the following characteristics:①the economic growth of count-y centre should be higher than the average level of economic growth in the valley;②county centre and neighboring areas had strong correlative type in economic growth;③The economy and population size of the county center should be above a certain threshold. Based on those characteristics, this paper quantitatively indentified three kinds of economic spatial structure types, e.g.core-periphery,point-axis type, and network type;In addition, classified the none gro-wth poles into four types, e.g.gathering type, polarization type, transitional type, and retarded type.(3) Taking 82 counties and districts of Wei valley as a study case, this paper uses Wilson imbalance index, ESDA—GIS, Geographic Statistics, Mathematical Statistics and other meth-ods combined with means of quantitative qualitative analysis the process and mechanism of Wei valley economy from 1990 to 2008,which from the aspects of unbalanced index, global m-oran'I index, level of economic growth, type of spatial association, type of spatial structure,g-roup deviation score, the number of counties, population size, GDP, Geographical distributio-n and spatial pattern. The result shows that economy spatial dissimilarity of Wei valley from 1990 to 2008 can be divided into three stages, relative concentration, relatively discrete and a-ssembles.Wei valley's Northwest, East, North-east of the downward trend in economic status; North, Central region's economic status enhanced year by year;the mainstream of Wei river va-lley is still the most developed regions in economic;Baoji's economic status enhanced year b-y year from 1990 to 2008,which growing influence on the economy of Wei river valley;Xi'an-Xianyang's economic status is very solid, Whic has always been the center of economic gro-wth center and the radiation of Wei river valley from 1990 to 2008.(4) The mechanism and operating mechanism of Valley economy spatial dissimilarity in Weihe River valley from 1990-2008 have been analyzed from the aspects of Natrual elements, policies, and socio-economic factors with the method of the Grey relational analysis and dynamic anlysis. Studies suggest that the natural factors, policy-institutional factors and socio-economic factors interact and influence the economic spatial differentiation of the Wei River valley together.(5) Specific recommendations of economic space optimization in Weihe River have been proposed. The specific measures are as follows:①build the space frame system as "a core, a shaft, four radiation";②optimizing the hierarchy of the economic space structure;③clarify the economic functional structure of each county;④improve the accessibility among the economic nodes;⑤intensify socio-economic division of labor and cooperation among Inter-regional;⑥promote the construction of economic integration.
