The retail industry is one of the most dynamic industries in China nowadays and plays an important role in the development of national economy. As the vector of retailing, cities have close relation to its development. The expansion and space change of cities influence the retail industry's scale and layout. The development of cities'economy is also a favorable factor to the retail. Meanwhile, the development of the retail industry also promotes the growth of urban economy and the variation of urban space. In the process of urbanization in China, cities are changing fast, so the retail faces huge changes of the external environment. Only adapt to these changes, the retail formats can access to better development. And the retail formats'good development also can be a vital element for the development of cities.Since 1990s, many retail formats appeared and expanded rapidly in China. In contrast with the mainly forms of department stores and grocery stores before the reform and opening in China, nowadays, the retail industry has developed to coexistence of multiple forms. The developments of the retail formats have close relationship with the urbanization in China. The urbanization not merely means the scale expand of the city, but also brings economic growth, adjustment in the industry structure and the transition of consumers demand, and these elements are essential to the change of retail formats. In addition, the study of retail formats in the west developed countries is also an important element to the change of retail formats in China. Different from the appearance and development of many retail formats at the same time in China, retail in the west have the history of more than 150 years, and the retail formats have specific characters of different phases. So in the long history of development of the retail formats, many classical theories come into being, which can have certain instructions to the development of retail in China.From the comprehensive survey of the progress of retail formats, we can find that the change of retail formats and urbanization is consistent. In the progress of urbanization, factors such as economic development level, income and consumption level of urban residents, the industrial structure, and the city's spatial structure have different characters at every stage. Corresponding to this condition, the development of retail formats at different stage has great diversities. Through the study of the change of retail formats with the corresponding stage of urbanization, we get a general understanding of the characteristics of urbanization, and analyze development of retail formats in different period, to summarize the influence of urbanization on the retail formats at the background of urbanization.In this paper, we summarize the retailing change in the progress of urbanization in China, and analyze the impacts of the urbanization on the development of retailing. Combining with the practical study of retailing change in Jinan with positive analysis, we can draw a conclusion that the urbanization plays an important role in retailing change. Meanwhile, retailing formats in China have many problems, such as unbalanced structure, convergent positioning and unreasonable layout. These problems become increasingly serious in the process of urbanization, which in turn affect the development of retailing formats, economic development and urban planning. Therefore, we appeal for the new reformation: diversify the retailing formats orientations, adapt the structure to the consumption need, and coordinate the formats layouts with the urban spatial layout, in order to achieve balanced development among the retailing and the city.
