Energy is the material basis for human existence and social development. There is a very complex interaction among energy system, environment system, and economic system. With the rapid development of world economy, the energy demand of all industries has been increasing rapidly, also the greenhouse gas emission has been increasing inevitability. Global climate warming has become a serious threat to human survival and development. As an important form of total final consumption, household energy consumption is directly related to the lifestyle of local residents. Also, as an important indicator of well-off level for residents, the energy structure is related to the standard of living. After analyzing the history and present situation, and summarizing the evolution rule in time and space, we can understand the interaction among household energy consumption and the factors. It will contribute to the country's energy planning, and also to the promoting of the coordinated and sustainable development among energy system, economic system and environment system.China is a country with large population and territory, and the temporal-spatial variation of household energy consumption is significant. In this paper, we studied at national and provincial scale. First, we set out the background and significance, and analyzed the size, structure and differences between urban and rural of household energy consumption. Then, we comprehensive evaluated the status of energy consumption using factor analysis for 30 provinces. Third, we made a quantitative comparison and analysis between temperature and household energy consumption. Fourth, we estimated the parameters between urbanization, income levels and energy consumption using panel data model. The overall level of household energy consumption in China showed a decreasing trend from northeast to southwest, which reflected the double-oriented role of temperature and economic development. In the national level, the impact of temperature on climate energy consumption was not significant, but there was certain relationship between temperature and climate electricity consumption. At the provincial level, the relationship between heating-degree value and coal consumption generally decreased from north provinces to the south ones. While the correlation between cooling-degree value and electricity consumption decreased substantially from south provinces to the north ones. This paper analyzes the relationship between household energy consumption, urbanization and income level for 30 provinces from 1997 to 2007 using panel data model. The results indicated that there are long run equilibrium relationships between these variables. Panel regression models showed that, the elastic coefficients of energy use to urban were different at different income levels, the elastic coefficients of energy use to income were different at different urbanization either.
