In China,Issues related to agriculture, countryside and peasants are of greatsignificance to national economic and social development. Now the economicdevelopment in our country on the whole has entered a stage with the characteristics ofpromoting rural development by industrial sector and urban sector, and it has had theconditions and abilities to support and protect the agriculture and countryside. Based onboth foreign and domestic experiences, the Fifth Plenary Session of the 16th CPCCentral Committee proposed the strategy of building new socialist countryside so as toachieve the harmonious development both in countryside and cities. Peasants play themain role in building the new socialist countryside. The key of building new socialistcountryside is to protect the benefits and promote the well-being of peasants. So studieson the peasants' participation in building new socialist countryside are of boththeoretical and practical importance.With the construction of new socialist countryside as the background, this researchfocused on the participation of peasants in Jiangsu province in building new socialistcountryside by adopting the theory of participatory development, spot investigation andcase study. The main results follow below.1. Peasants play the main role in building new socialist countryside. The target ofbuilding new socialist countryside is not only to increase peasants' income ,but also toestablish and maintain the main status of peasants .Building new socialist countrysidemust ensure the peasants' right to participate in it.2. Peasants are quite aware of the importance of building new socialist countryside.The awareness, value and participation desire promote the peasants to partcitipate inbuilding new socialist countryside. But peasants' quality and other participatory bodiesincluding local government and experts will exert great influences on the peasants'participation in this process.3. Peasants will be more involved in building new socialist countryside bystrengthening propaganda, innovating participatory, mechanism, increasing publicinvestment, training peasants and optimizing related rules and regulations.
