Empirical Study Of The Coordinate Development Of The Regional Economy In Fujian

Fujian Province has introduced the non-balanced regional development strategy since the reform and opening up. This achieved a rapid economic development in Fujian Province, but on the other hand it enlarged the disparity between the southeast costal areas and northwest hilly regions in Fujian. Due to the administrative divisions and the management system reasons, the cities of Fujian Province developed respectively without the synergic mechanisms. It become hard to form a strong power for the over regional development. Fujian is facing the reality of losing and reducing more and more advantage .The gap between Fujian and the developed regions is growing while the gap between Fujian and less developed regions become smaller . So the government of Fujian province has fingered out a strategic plan to build a boom economic zone on the west side of the straits which is not only the sum-up and innovation of the experience during the past 20 years of reform and opening up ,but also the inevitable choice of China's southeast coastal areas.The purpose here is to give empirical analysis on the statistical estimate of the regional development in Fujian. The author has ,according to the regional economic reality in Fujian, made statistical estimate and practical analysis on the regional economic development in a single province and put forward suggestions and measures that might facilitate coordinated regional economic development in Fujian Province.The author considering the criteria and requirements of the overall evaluation index system used both at home and abroad and the practical situation of Fujian's modernization drive, has concentrated on sixteen index cited according to modern economic level and economic structure, scientific and technological development and the quality of population, social development and people's living standard, and ecological environment and natural resources. The selected index constitute a comprehensive index system that can reflect the regional economic development all over the area.The analysis shown that the development of the nine cities of Fujian province are in difference levels. Using cluster analysis methods the nine cities can be divided into four categories : Fuzhou, Ningde, and Longyan City in the first categories; Xiamen, Zhangzhou, and Nanping in the second category; And the third category are Sanming and Quanzhou. Putian city form the fourth separate categories. Fuzhou, Xiamen,and Quanzhou are all economically developed citiesthough, they shown much specialty in the process of modernization. The Cities Alliance of Fujian wad proved to be scientific and rational according to the classification results from the data characteristics of urban development. Finally, the article discussed some issues of the urban development of economic zone on the west side of the straits ,including three kinds of relationship which the Fujian Province should handle discreetly.
