The retail commercial development is an important symbol to weigh the degree of economic development of cities. As the political, economic and cultural center, Beijing's economic development is essential safeguard for being a modernized international metropolis. Obviously, the retail commercial development is an effective method to realize the economic growth. Especially, after China joins WTO, the retail trade market will open gradually, the retail enterprises which invested by foreigners will be treated as same as the national enterprises. As a result, the international well-known retail enterprise will speed up entering the Chinese market. Beijing, with its advantages of geography and the good development environment, will become the preferred place for these foreign retail enterprises to enter China. At the same time, the native retail enterprise will also face with the stern trial. Therefore, Beijing's retail development is facing with the opportunity and the challenge. Only on the basis of making fall use of the outer condition and the developing opportunity to meet the challenge and construct own commercial system, can we guarantee and promote the rapid, healthy and sustainable development of retail business in Beijing. It has not only great value in academic research, but also meets the practical request in city commercial development and the commercial globalization tendency of China at present.The retail business prosperous or not depends on the consumption environment, the consumption environment is also inseparable with consumer's demand. Furthermore, consumer's demand has close relationship with such factors as the inhabitant's income and population distribution. Therefore, this paper brings the retail business development and the population factor together, attempt to seek relations between these two factors.This research paper, taking retail trade of Beijing as a case study, gives the systemic introduction to the demography characteristics, income, consumption structure first. After that, the paper analyses in detail the current station of retail trade in Beijing. On this basis, the paper chooses five indicators, gross domestic products,developed area,population density,annual discretionary income per capital,aggregate retail price index, which represent socio-economic development level, analyses separately the relationships between total retail sales of consumer goods, density of commerce network and these five indicators from 1980 to 2003 in Beijing, based on the multiple regression model. By data analyzing, this paper try to indicate the inner link between socio-economic development and retail trade development, to find out the main factors which influence retail trade development of Beijing, to provide the policy- makers the theoretical basis to make macro decision.
