The Impact Of Scientific And Technological Advancement On National Interests

Science and technology is the most active factor in the social productivity, while it is also the dominant force for the social transformation. National interests are among the basic motives of the nation's diplomatic activities, and also the highest standard for disposing the international relations. Science and technology and national interests have very close relationships.This paper studies the influences to national interests by the advancement of science and technology. From the perspective of STS, this paper constructs a analytical framework which is composed of"the advancement of science and technology strengthens the national interests'defense capability","the advancement of science and technology enlarges the national interests'developing-space","the advancement of science and technology increases the possibilities for conflicts between national-interests","the advancement of science and technology facilitates the coexisting of different national-interests".The advancement of science and technology favors to form the national interests, while it helps to increase the defense capability for the national interests by renovating the arms, improving the personal quality of army men, and innovating the battle mode. Furthermore, the advancement of science and technology enlarges the national interests'developing-space, such as the natural developing ones, the information and social ones. Accompanied with the extension of national interests'space, the advancement of science and technology influences the national interests from two contrary directions: one is that the advancement of science and technology increases the national interests'conflicts in matter, spirit, and system; the other one is that the advancement of science and technology enhances the national interests'coexisting in the following three dimensionalities, those are, national interests'mutual pervasion, dependence and cooperation.
