With the economic growing rapidly and the development of modern science and technology, the logistics industry in China's become a new economy-growing-point as an emerging service sector. According to the Statistics, the government paid more attention to the status of China's modern logistics industry. Logistics market is growing rapidly. For example, the amount of logistics in China's reached 158.7 trillion Yuan from 2001 to 2005, with an average annual increase of 15%. Now the logistics industry in China will enter a new stage, facing broad prospects of development. We will face more opportunities and challenges to achieve this goal. Modern logistics industry is different from the traditional logistics industry. It provides more services such as freighting, inventory management, labeling, local delivery, sorting and packaging. So modern logistics companies face more risks, and insurance is the best way to transfer risk. But logistics insurance remains at an early stage in China at present. There is no other logistics insurance product available except the logistics cargo insurance and logistics liability insurance designed by the People's Insurance Company of China in 2004.Moreover, systematic theoretical research on logistics insurance is almost blank. On the other hand, the total logistics in the year of 2004 and 2005 amounted to 38.4 thousand billion and 48.1 thousand billion respectively. However, the total insurance expense was respectively mere 9 billion and 11 billion, accounting for 0.31% and 0.32% of the total logistics expense. Besides, transportation insurance made up the main part of the insurance expense. Therefore we come to this conclusion that insurance has not played a critical role in the high-risk logistics industry. On the one hand the logistics companies have a strong demand for insurance; on the other hand the existing insurance products did not play an important role.In this background, this paper briefly introduce the development of the Third Party Logistics in china and analyses the risks faced by the 3PL.Then the author discusses the development of China's logistics insurance and put forward some proposals. This paper is divided into three chapters. Chapter I describes the concept of the logistics and the development of the Third Party Logistics in china.Chapter II defines logistics insurance, which is different from other theoretical studies. And then introduce the current status of the development of China's logistics insurance. After that, the author analyses the defects and problems of the existing logistics insurance products. Chapter III of this paper is divided into three sections to give some proposals to improve the status of the logistics insurance.Following is the main features and innovations of this paper. Firstly, the author put forward the new concept of logistics insurance. Secondly, the risks faced by the 3PL are increasing with the rapid development of the logistics industry in China. But there is little research on the logistics insurance. This paper impulses the study on it in china. Thirdly, the case studies and theoretical analysis are combined in this paper. So this makes it more vivid and more practical, getting out of the limitations of purely theoretical study. Fourthly, this paper paid more attention to the specific insurance product, making the study into more micro level.Of course, there are also some shortcomings. For example, there are no foreign logistics insurance literatures. Although it is known that foreign logistics insurance has been developed for a very long time, the author could not find any and use for reference. The author also has been trying to find some logistics insurance cases and the selling status on the insurance market. However, the author has never got any relevant information. Therefore, this paper seems a little pale without the analysis of insurance logistics cases and some idea may be different from the practice of logistics insurance market.
