In the year of 2006, Chengdu had been crowned as "the Top Tourist City in China". By this opportunity, the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding& Research Base (CGPBRB) had been upgraded as the AAAA Level Scenic Area, which made the CGPBRB turned to be a scenic area from a scientific and research institution. In the face of increasing visitors, it is a great challenge for CGPBRB to balance the relationship between the panda conversation and tourism development.Based on the Tourism General Planning of Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding& Research Base and the Planning and Designing of Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Park, this thesis, in the light of theories of sustainable development and ecology, summarized patterns of protective tourism development for CGPBRB, provided definitions of the protective tourism development and giant panda ecotourism, and clarified that the protective tourism development is the indispensable choice for CGPBRB. Furthermore, this thesis analyzed the tourism resources, marketing and present development in order to find its problems and deficiencies. Finally, the theories of Future Culture Heritage and Experience Economy were applied to this case concerning about the space layout, image orientation, tourism product designing, landscaping, resource protection and environmental education.The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapterl gives an introduction to the CGPBRB, background, research foundation, significances and methods of this research. Chapter2 is about the theories. The author defines the Protective Tourism Development, and summarizes available theories and patterns of protective tourism development. Chapter3 deals with the case study, which labors the present development of tourism resources, marketing and tourism development for CGPBRB, and find out its problems and deficiencies. Chapter4 is the key part of this thesis, applied theories above, the author made a further research on CGPBRB, including the goals and principles of protective tourism development, functional space layout, tourism image orientation, tourism product designing, landscaping, resources protection and environmental education. Chapter5 draws a conclusion for the whole thesis, including the research summarization, innovations, deficiencies and the issues needs further research.
