The Research Of The Directional Signage System Design For The Public Environment

Along with the rapid race of city constructions, the city keep upsizing and the city building continuously rise. At the same time, various functional places have been increasing, for example, hotel and entertainment places, retail and commercial places, gyms and exhibitions, hospital and health care centers, education and fares premise,office and traffic stations, etc. As a result, the public environment becomes more complicated than ever in the city. The environment gets so confusing and cluttered that people tend to get lost in it. Then people have to go to ask for help to identify the public environment from the corresponding reference. So people need the directional signage to help them identify the public environment. For those cities with large visitors everyday, excellent directional signage system for the public environment, which can bring forth high efficient traffic for people, will be a necessary instrument.The public environment is the necessary place for people's daily life and social life. And directional signage is the vital tool for the information exchange within the public environment. For one thing, directional signage system for the public environment embodies the whole society environment, and for another, its building helps people identify the environment better and provide more convenience for their action.This research is based on the background of the directional signage for the public environment, current situation for its research home and abroad, and its history. Combined with domestic and international materials on it and field investigation, I probe into it and analyze its corresponding elements such as programming, designing, making and installing. Based on those elements, from the directional signage for the public environment and the interrelationship between the environment and people, I analyze the influence of the people's dimensions, vision feeling, pedestrian flow on the directional signage system for the public environment, also the coordination and unity between the directional signage and the public environment. Then I probe into several points of directional signage for the public environment, i.e. the systematism, standardization, humanization, individuation and diversification, which need concerns for its building and implementation. At the same time, in the practice part, I analyze the actual program and get first-hand material of directional signage for a park which I've been taken part in.
