China is the top apple producer in the world, with the cultivation area of 2.2 million hectares and the total output of nearly 25 million tons in the year 2005. Since China entered the World Trade Organization, apple has become one of the country's major agricultural exports with stronger international competitiveness, and it plays a vital role in advancing agricultural structure adjustment and promoting local economic development; therefore, the expansion of apple exportation makes a great contribution to China's agricultural and economic development. Besides, apple juice concentrate is the most important apple processed product. During the recent years, the international market demand for concentrated apple juice has been growing especially in those developed countries, such as the United States and German, which curtail their domestic production and enlarge the imports because of their domestic increasing production costs. It undoubtedly provides more opportunities for China's apple juice concentrate exportation, booms the nation's apple production and processing industry as well as boosts China's agriculture. The purpose of the thesis is to study the issues of national competitive advantages and international market environment for China's apples and apple juice concentrate. First, it introduces the status quo of worldwide as well as China's apple and apple juice production, consumption and trade conditions. Then, the author uses the "Diamond Framework" derived from competitive advantage proposed by Michael Porter to analyze the advantages and disadvantages in the China's apple industry by analyzing six major elements, including factor conditions, domestic consumption, related industries, domestic industry competition, government polices and chance events. In this part, the thesis tries to make geographical marketing segmentation for the global market of apples and concentrated juice, respectively expatiating the demand features and policy environment in the major regional overseas markets, including EU, CIS, ASEAN and NAFTA. Subsequently, combining with the current situation of China's apple and juice concentrate exportation, the thesis identifies the potential overseas target markets for China. In order to support the arguments and the viewpoints of this thesis, two specific case studies are provided to illustrate the measures and suggestions to be made. Finally, the thesis proposes several suggestions for the government, associations, businesses and growers to fertilize the production, processing and exportation of apples and juice concentrate so that the competitive advantages of China's apple and juice export industry will be strongly enhanced.
