Industry Restructuring Of Cities And Their Functional Transformation In The Regional System In The Course Of Economic Globalization

This paper is one of the sub-projects of "Urban System Transformation of Yangtze River Delta Area in the Course of Economic Globalization". Based on the case study of Shanghai, the paper quantitatively analyses industry restructure of the city and its functional transformation in the regional system in the course of economic globalization, and then parses the cause-effective mechanism among them.This paper study a special period range from 1995 to 2005. Firstly, it establishes globalization indexes, and describes Shanghai's state of globalization from Trade,FDI,Internet and Tour in this course. It also compares Shanghai's globalization characters with Hongkong,Singapore and Nanjing,Suzhou,Hangzhou,Ningbo to find out the position of Shanghai in the world as well as in the regional.By taking on urban economic structure as a clue, this paper analyses industry restructuring of Shanghai and its change in the Value-chain on different lays, and then observes its functional transformation in the same period which could be token as evolution of regional urban system.Finally, it adopts quantitative analysis to verify the correlativity suppose between globalization and industry restructure and functional transformation of Shanghai. Furthermore, it demonstrates that economic globalization is making Shanghai becoming an important node in the global economic network and significant part of global industry "value chain".In conclusion, we find Shanghai enters into "industry chain" and "value chain" of global economic network in the background of globalization, so that urban system and their relationship-net has come a essential change.
