As an indispensable part of comprehensive transportation system, waterway transportation is a service and foundational industry of national economy. Waterway transportation not only supplies the national economy with services such as transportation, loading and unloading, but also offers the guarantee for the international trade. In the meanwhile, it drives other departments of the national economy. Waterway transportation contributes a lot to the development of economy and society. This dissertation first gives out a review of related research methods and theories both home and abroad. Secondly, this dissertation defines the scope of waterway transportation's contribution to economy and society. Thirdly, it establishes a system of indexes that evaluates the contribution of waterway transportation to economy and society. Fourthly, it measures the contribution of waterway transportation to economy and society quantitatively, which adopts BP neural network for direct contributions and input-output model for indirect and triggered contributions. BP neural network is an effective method in coping with complicated nonlinear relation problems. Input-output method is an important tool in researching the interaction effect and relation among different departments in national economy. The precondition of input-output method—input-output table's data collection and department division both need certain technical methods. This dissertation regards the newly compiled 122 department's input-output table of our country in 2002 as a basis and then combines and divides this table to an input-output table of 36 departments in order to do quantitative research. Fifthly, it describes waterway transportation's contribution from the perspective of qualitative analysis. The results show that not only did waterway transportation contribute 3.66% to the GDP both directly and indirectly, but also it offered great support to the related lower industries. In order to improve the results of quantitative analysis, it is necessary to get a more accurate calculation after the national bureau of statistics of China finishes the 2007 national input-output table.
