Currently, one of the primary focuses of the research of land use /land cover change has been on"hot spots"and"typical areas". Researchers do this in order to probe into the complexities of land use / land cover change, trying not to be one-sided in the large-scale analysis. Since 1990s, four boroughs (Fengnan, Leting, Tanghai and Luannan) in the coastal region of the southern Tangshan has witnessed vigorous economic development and rapid increase in population. Besides, a group of major projects (Jing-tang port, Caofeidian port, seashore freeway, Jidong Nanpu oil field) have been under construction. These developments have led to dramatic and increasing changes in land use/ land cover. Thus, the author picked the southern part of Tangshan, a hot-spot and typical area, as the research area and wrote this thesis. Using remote sensing technology and geographic information system technology, the author acquired two-period information about land use/cover from the research area. Based on this information, the author analyzed the mechanism of land use / land cover change in the research area. The research coverage is as follows:1. Using four papery land use maps of the research area made in 1990 and two ALOS satellite images made in 2007, the author got the land use maps in the research areas in 1990 and 2007.2. By overlaying layers of land use of two periods, the author analyzed the amount, speed and direction and the extent of land use change. Based on the research methods of landscape ecology, the author also explored number of patches, diversity index, dominance index, evenness index and fragmentation index in the research area.3. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, the author tried to find out the factors that caused the changes of land use in the research areas. The main results are as follows:1. Using the remote sensing imagery ALOS, this study has completed the land use map of Southern Tangshan and it shows that this new type data can be used in monitoring land use/land cover change.2. The structure of land use in the study area has changed obviously, and it is reflected by the substantial increase in construction land and significant decrease in unutilized land. The main directions of land use change are unutilized land to cropland, cropland to construction land and water areas. The speed of land use change is great, and the utilization degree of land is constantly improved.3. Driving mechanism analysis shows that the increase of population and economic growth is the main driving forces of increase in cropland and decrease in unutilized land. Whether unutilized land is easily transferred to cropland is affected by its distance to counties, villages, towns and rivers. Whether cropland is easily transferred to construction land is affected by its distance to counties, villages, factories and mining sites. Whether cropland is easily transferred to water area is affected by its distance to rivers.Through the study, we can see that all kinds of indexes of land use, especially those supported by landscape ecology, are very important in the study of land use/land cover change. Logistic regression is useful in the analysis of driving mechanism.
