As a new manufacture mode, Mass Customization has drawn widely attention and been regarded as the development tendency of manufacturing in the 21st century. Mass Customization can provide products and services that fulfill customers'various requirements with the efficiency and cost of Mass production. Design for Mass Customization (DFMC) is the key element of Mass Customization.Based upon the facts mentioned above, this thesis focuses on the theoretic system of DFMC, and classifies and summarizes various DFMC methodologies and techniques existing now , including Modularized Design, Group technology and Concurrent Engineering, from different two aspects: theoriodical aspect and practical aspect. As a result, the research introduces a matrix approach in order to assist designers in generating feasible design alternatives for a specific set of customer requirements. This approach can use the attributes of matrix to eliminate infeasible design component combinations and generate feasible design alternatives. Therefore a possibility is created for a coding system to be developed to manipulate geometric parameter information and to provide an interface between the product design and CAD/CAM/CIM systems. The matrix approach applicability is demonstrated in choosing a sport shoe design. Note that the relational data was used throughout the procedure development. The matrix approach for DFMC provides designers an efficient way of generating feasible design alternatives by which they can assess the feasibility of designing through auto-design during the process of settling designing problem. For more designing communication can be accessed, so that the choice of design parameter can be more accurate and the choices made by customers can be easier, Future studies shall focus on integrating the matrix approach with a graphic representation procedure using the Internet allowing more convenient design communication. In addition, a performance evaluation procedure is considered to help generate enough feasible design alternatives and assess the quality of the recommended designs.
