| China is one of the biggest countries in fisheries around the world. With several decades' development, the aquatic products export trade has been taking up a very important position in domestic agriculture and economy. Moreover, it also contributes a lot to world fisheries development. The total amount of aquatic products export for china in 2006 was 3.015 million tons, with a value of 9.36 billion US dollars, which was 30% of the total value for agricultural products export nationally and 8.5% of the whole world, ranking first both domestically and abroad. The progress of the aquatic products export trade in china has not only provided more and more opportunities for overplus rural labor forces, improved farmer's income, but also promoted the aquatic products' competitiveness in international market, and advanced the internationalization as well as modernization of fisheries. Several decades' development experience has proved that promoting the export of aquatic products and developing the export-oriented fisheries is an advisable way leading to a comprehensive, sound and sustainable development of fisheries. However, China is not a strong country in fisheries in the world, for the growth of aquatic products export still depends considerably on the expansion of production scale and massive consumption of natural resources. It is well known that China boasts abundant fisheries resources, low labor cost and mature aquacultural technology, but its aquatic product export is challenged by several factors both domestically and abroad, including extensive way of production, underdeveloped technology, low quality, vicious competition, low value-added, fewer product forms, technical barrier to trade, anti-dump etc., all of which result in restricting the further development of the export of aquatic products from China in the possible future. Thus, research on how to promote the export of aquatic products becomes more and more urgent and important. This paper tries to find out the problems and negative factors from the present status of aquatic products export and its characteristics through a thorough study on the history of aquatic products export as well as the achievements and experience of the sixty years development. Based on the analysis of global production and consumption trend in future, a strategic choice directing to a sound and sustainable development of fisheries and further advancement of aquatic products export is suggested. In addition, suggestions are also given on how to improve the capacity to compete in international market to not only the governments, but also industrial associations and fisheries enterprises in China. |
