The sustainable development theory came into being based on the explosive growth of worldwide population, the gradual shortage of natural resource and the continually deterioration of ecological environment. It has become the basic starting point of establishing government policy, as well as the model and inevitable choice of economy development since the conception of sustainable development was proposed. Chongqing, one of the four municipalities in China, has made rapid progress in economy development since the beginning of the 21st century. However, the conflict among economic development, natural resource and environment became to be emergent, and how to ensure the economy increase at a healthy and sustainable style become the major challenge to the government.With the quantitative and qualitative methods as well as the combination of the Chongqing's actual situation, systematic study on the relationship between water resource and sustainable development of industrial economy in Chongqing is carried out in this paper. The main content is as following:First of all, the sustainable development status at home and abroad are systematically reviewed. In this part, theory of sustainable development, theory of water resources and economic systems, as well as relative theory of sustainable development evaluation are illustrated.Second, Chongqing's industrial economy, water resources and water environment status are explained from a qualitative and quantitative point of view. The evaluation index system of Chongqing Municipal's water resources and sustainable development of industrial economy is established based on the time dimension with the construction principle and screening method of the evaluation index system.Third, by the use of entropy method and the "principle of bucket", evaluation and analysis of Chongqing's water resources for sustainable economic and industrial development status from 1999 to 2006 are carried out. Finally, in order to ensure the sustainable development both of water resources and industrial economy, appropriate strategies are proposed to resolve the existing problems that occurred during the sustainable development of economy and society in Chongqing.As a conclusion, the current water resources and industrial economy development in Chongqing are at the status of sustainable. The sub support system of water resources become an critical constraint factor for sustainable development. During the further development of high-tech enterprises in Chongqing Municipality in future, the improvement of water resources use efficiency is more important.
