The Impact Of Economic Openness On Energy Technical Efficiency Of China

Energy,as labor and capital,has become an important basic strategic resource to economic development.The shortage of supply and low efficiency in energy using in China has caused severe obstacles to economic growth and the continuing development,thus making the improvement of energy technical efficiency essential and necessary. Together with the development of opening up to the outside world,foreign trade and FDI in each area have increased rapidly,however,does the opening up improve the energy technical efficiency?Most papers regarding the relationship between opening up and energy efficiency concerned about indexes as energy productivity or intensity of energy-consuming per unit,but didn't consider the technical improvement.Although a few papers did consider it,they neglected the impact of opening up to the outside world,and only used DEA to calculate the efficiency,which leads to shortcomings.Whereas this thesis uses SFA, taking the gradient of opening up the outside world into account,to calculate energy technical efficiency in different areas thus to verify the relationship between opening up and energy technical efficiency.First,by telling differences of several indexes measuring energy efficiency,this thesis shows the rationality of using energy technical efficiency to reflect energy efficiency,which is defined as the ratio of optimal output divided by actual output of unit energy-consuming.Then,the thesis expounds the connection between opening up and energy technical efficiency after comparing the condition of energy consuming and reservation and opening up of each area.Then,through building a logical model by SFA to calculate the efficiency and impact of opening up,the thesis uses Frontier4.1 to estimate the model and gets empirical result expected which proves the improvement of energy technical efficiency in each area as well as difference,also positive significant impact of opening up.At last,some suggestions are put forward to continue the development of opening up in order to improve energy technical efficiency.
