Textile industry was usually one of the forerunners during the process of industrialization of the developed countries and it functions as an important pillar of national industries in the developing countries. As a major textile producer, exporter and consumer in the world,Chinese textile industry makes a great contribution in maintaining a stable development of Chinese economy and has a far-reaching impact on the world's textile industry.Nowadays,Chinese textile industry is at a key stage of experiencing its structural readjustment. Therefore,a thorough comparative study of the international competitiveness and deficiency gaps of Chinese textile industry has become one of the best methods for strengthening its future development. This paper tries to present an objective appraisal of the international competitiveness of Chinese textile industry by incorporating the qualitative analysis and the empirical analysis. The Diamond Model initiated by Michael E.Poter is used in exercising the qualitative analysis.Six elements are involved in this model, including factor endowments, demand, relative industries, enterprise strategy, opportunities and government. This paper analyzes the international competitiveness of Chinese textile industry and sums up its competitive advantages and disadvantages from the above-mentioned six elements of the model.By way of integrating papers published by Jin Pei,Pei Changhong,Ren Ruoen and Zhang Jinchang about the evaluation indicator system of industry's international competitiveness this paper divides the evaluating indicators affecting the textile industry into two categories. One category reflects the sale ability of industries, including Export Market Share,Revealed Comparative Advantage Index(RCA), Index of Export Rise Advantage. The other category reflects the profitability of industries, including Trade Specialization Coefficient(TSC),Net Export Revealed Comparative Advantage Index(NERCA),Net Export Growth Rate(NXGR).Coupled with the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP)this paper tries to build up an evaluation indicator system about international competitiveness of textile industry. In addition the method of questionnaire is used to define the weight of each evaluating indicator.Based on the data collecting and procession, this paper selects the ten largest textile export countries from 1998 to 2007 as the compared sample, including China, USA,Korea,India,Pakistan,Turkey,Indonesia,Canada,Mexico and Thailand. Applying the method of comprehensive index analysis this paper counts comprehensive index and variability index of the ten countries. At last by counting the ranking index this paper presents an empirical study of international competitiveness of Chinese textile industry.Although Chinese textile industry currently displays a comparatively strong international competitiveness, the space for its further development is getting smaller. Therefore,in the post-quota period,in order to grasp the trend of world's textile industry development,to enhance the competitiveness of Chinese textile industry,to transform Chinese textile industry from the center of manufacturing into the center of profitability, this paper puts forward some pertinence policy suggestions from the viewpoint of both the government and the enterprises.
