Neo-classical economics maintains that corporations exist to provide products and/or services that produce profits for their shareholders and argues that a corporation's purpose is to maximize returns to its shareholders, and corporations are only responsible to their shareholders and not to society. However,in the context of globalization of economy and with the rapid development of transnational corporations, traditional views about competitiveness, survival and profitability are being swept away.A new concept, known as corporate social responsibility(CSR),has, since the 1970s,been popular among corporations."Corporate Social Responsibility",refers to the economic, legal, ethic and charitable responsibilities that corporations shall bear, not only to their shareholders, but also,to employees, consumers, business partners, government, communities and other interested parties with the ultimate goal of sustainable development of the economy and society.CSR proponents point out that CSR can significantly improve long-term corporate profitability because it reduces risks and inefficiencies while offering a host of potential benefits such as enhanced brand reputation and employee engagement. This article in its first chapter deals with the origin of CSR and from the political, economic and cultural perspectives explains the reasons why CSR has been brought to attention and CSR movement in the west is also introduced. In second chapter, emphasis is given to CSR's development and arguments among corporations and theorists, and there three supporting theories of CSR are explained in details. The third chapter focuses on the standardization of CSR and one popular standard:SA 8000.Based on its 2008 version, the major contents of SA 8000 is analyzed and in the fourth chapter briefs CSR's introduction to and spread in China makes the comparison between CSR in the west and China. The fifth and most important chapter first comes the analysis of CSR issues faced by exporting corporations in China and then answers how and why buyers conduct factory inspection and followed by the understandings of CSR of exporting corporations. Finally the conclusion is drawn that exporting corporations should follow the international trend and carry out CSR so as to enhance their capability to keep sustainable and harmonious growth.
