A virtual team is a group of people working with a shared purpose across space, time, and organizations with technology."Working across space"is the core feature of virtual team. Virtual team is a human resource organizational mode featured with being"project-oriented", dynamic, flexible, and efficient. It is honored as one of the HR organizational mode in the 21st century, and has advantages like low cost, high efficiency, and flexible teamwork. The study on the application of virtual team mode in engineering consulting industry has importance in both theoretic study and practice.The mode of virtual team has already been randomly used in engineering consulting industry. However, there are few relevant systematic thinking and research, in lack of theories and methodologies on virtual team's management mode, team building, communication channel, knowledge management, etc. in engineering consulting projects.With methodologies of document analysis, theoretic overview, summarization and deduction, this paper brings out four organizational forms of virtual team in engineering consulting projects: inter-organizational virtual team with equivalent cooperation, inter-organizational virtual team with core member, inner-organizational virtual team with externally-employed professionals, inner-organizational virtual team with multiple departments and locations. This paper also summarizes six key elements for the smooth application of virtual team in engineering consulting projects: proper virtual team organizational structure, efficient team management, efficient communication channel, harmonious team culture, reasonable knowledge sharing mode, and efficient information platform.This paper analyzes the practical operation of the 1st-level land developing consulting project of Ping Guo Yuan Transportation Hub Business District. This consulting team is featured with"working across space", which is the core feature of virtual team. From the perspective of virtual team, the paper analyzes the problems of all participating parties in team management, communication, collaboration, cultural difference, technical support, knowledge sharing, etc., which emerged during the early stage of the project, suggests establishing an inter-organizational virtual team with core member, explains improvement measures on the problems mentioned above respectively, and demonstrates the successful application of virtual team in Ping Guo Yuan Engineering Consulting Project with the analysis on optimization results. The analysis and study in this paper will be of reference values for the introduction and application of virtual team in engineering consulting projects.
