Nowadays the mosaics, mostly called glass mosaics, are manufactured in square forms and applied by the factories. Tiling of the mosaics on a grid base is done manually in factories to reflect a predetermined design. In this study a fully-automated system has been developed for tiling the mosaics mainly for pictures consist of 3 kinds of colors with little human intervention on the basis of researches from both domestic places and overseas. In this study, the existing automatic mosaic tiling processes are analyzed firstly. Then a new auto-tiling process is designed, and a general designing plan mainly powered by pneumatic components is presented. It is made up with the automatic feeding system fixed with position system, the tiling system carrying groups of vacuum cups, and the grid carrying system. Critical technologies of each sys tem is introduced, and a experimental machine is manufactured finally.During the designing process, an optimal model based on multi- target programming is developed to show the connections among the structure of the experimental machine and its productivity and manufacture cost. The result goes to the optimal number of the groups of vacuum cups each tiling module consists, Which would lead to the balance of low cost and high production efficiency. A workflow model is also developed to get a compatible order of all the design tasks, based on the DSM theory. The rest of the researches are all been done on the two key points of the automatic mosaic tiling machine mentioned above — the design of the vibratory bowl feeder and the tiling system carrying groups of vacuum cups. Tests have been conducted to the experimental machine, and the appropriate parameters have been concluded to verify the result of the multi-target programming model.
