Belt conveyor is one of the main application tools in transportation industry at present. With these advantages including large volume, simple structure, low cost involved and easy maintenance, belt conveyor is widely used in coal mine, wharf port and so on. In recent years, with the increasing of belt conveyor’s production efficiency and materials on it, belt conveyor has to run and be under a high load condition for a long time, this may increase the frequency of broken belt and cause serious casualties and huge economic losses. So in addition to paying more attention to the security of the belt conveyor, a kind of matched broken belt catcher is needed to protect the belt conveyor after the belt broke.According to the working condition of the existing belt conveyor, a new kind of belt conveyor is designed in view of the requirement of delivery safety put forward after the analysis of past design experiences of broken belt protectors. According to the working principle of this broken belt catcher, the structures of every component are designed with taking the coordination relation between them into account. Then 3D model of this whole device is establishment. Having analyzed the stress status of the broken belt catcher when working, key components under large load are found out. To have an accurate study on these components, the software ANSYS Workbench is used to study their deformation under loads which can help to confirm whether these components are safe enough. In addition, on the basis of conclusion that they all match the condition, the software can also optimize their structure size and get reasonable dimensions.The dynamic characteristics of the broken belt catcher are studied with analysis of stress status when it is in the condition of balance and working. This can help to obtain its working time from the position of balance to the position of braking and the influencing factors. The software ADAMS is used to conduct the simulation of belt according to its characteristics and actual working status and forces and constraints are needed to be imposed on the ADAMS model. Through the calculation, simulation results can be obtained to be compared with its actual working results. The broken belt catcher model is proposed to lead in the belt model, forces and constraints being imposed, simulation commands being controlled. Simulation can be conducted to describe the belt-breaking process and the broken belt catcher’s working process. Compared with the theory, the simulation results can be proved to be reasonable.In consideration of the viscoelastic characteristics of the belt, a kind of dynamic model based on Vogit model is established to study the belt’s vibration status after being caught. According to the stress status of every unit, the dynamic differential equation is written out and solved as the status when caught being initial conditions and the time needed from vibration status to stable state of the belt.
